Food & Restaurants

Portugal is known for excellent food and first class natural ingredients. Colares is no exception, both in terms of buying food and eating out. There are amazing food scenes nearby in Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra, all of which are accessible from Colares, but the local area also has some gems.

Shops

  • Supermercado Atlantico in Colares (walkable) is very good, and there is a smaller shop called O Pomarinho selling fresh local produce nearby.
  • Just up the road in Janas are two wonderful local stores selling healthy local produce and other artisanal delights – don’t miss the Aldea organic co-operative.
  • Mercado Praia das Maçãs is a great market near the beach, and there is a supermarket (Supermercado Camarão) nearby also.
  • There are big supermarkets such as Continente, Pingo Doce and Lidl in and around Sintra, and a more up-market supermarket called Supercor in Beloura.
  • There are two excellent large shopping centres nearby: Sintra Forum (https://alegro.pt/alegro-sintra) and CascaiShopping (https://www.cascaishopping.pt/en/home/) both of which are about 20-25 mins drive from the house.

Restaurants

  • Ribeirinha Colares is adorable and delicious – quite the local secret – and with a little notice they can sometimes be persuaded to offer take-out to eat at home.
  • Buzio in Praia das Maçãs is very good for seafood and Portuguese food
  • At Praia Grande, Nortada is excellent and has a wonderful sunset view, and Bar do Fundo is also very good.
  • On the beautiful coastal road down to Cabo da Roca and Cascais, there is Moinho Dom Quixote, which is highly recommended for its view over Guincho beach and the food is good too.
